About Rachael Beard

My love for art started in my hometown, Chagrin Falls, Ohio. There I learned how to really see an object and translate that seeing onto a page through pencil, pen, charcoal, and eventually paint. In highschool I worked primarily with acrylics, oil sticks, and multimedia, building a portfolio of more realistic paintings that explored colors in everyday objects. While that portfolio is not currently on this website, I am working to add it for viewing.

I then continued my pursuit of creating art at Skidmore College where I double majored in studio art and psychology with concentrations in painting, communication design, and neuroscience. My painting portfolio was greatly influenced by the impressionist's approach to color, the teachings of the Chinese landscape painters, and the work of Michael Mazur and my professor, David Miller. Additionally, my studies in neuroscience greatly impacted my thinking about the process of painting. The two majors merged at the end with my studio art senior thesis, Mind Landscapes, in which I explored the way in which we create memories and the process for creating a painting, layer after layer. You can read more about my thoughts on the painting process in my artist's statement.

In college, you'll notice that most of my work was on a very large scale. I now reside in New York City and paint in my studio apartment. Given the standard size of a New York City apartment, my paintings have had to scale down slightly (though I am still able to squeeze out a 50" x 50" painting every now and then).

Living in NYC, I spend my time creating acrylic or oil paintings, designing marketing materials, developing websites, and running the nonprofit LinkEducation.org which is the only comprehensive place in NYC for parents and educators to find quality education programs and resources for their children. Prior to launching LinkEducation, I was part of the national development team at Teach For America.
